Only choose Shinkansen if you are
- a train lover / otaku
- have loads of time (it takes time looonger than plane)
And keep in mind the Shinkansen only reach to Hakodate.
You need to take bus or train to go to Sapporo (the main city).
If you have the extra fee, go there! Especially in winter.
There are snow sculpture festival (winter) or soran matsuri (kind of traditional folk dance) in summer.
I love Hokkaido!
Shinkansen is too expensive. I'd like to recommend Japan's airline ANA's Experience JAPAN Fare, it only cost 10,800 yen if you are living outside Japan.
I've heared, that it's worth going because of the most delicious food in Japan! Also, I think, that it's great place for people, who like nature, walking trips etc, because there are many beautiful mountain landscapes, waterfalls, national parks, like Daisetsuzan, Shiretoko, or Lake Toya.
