For the early spring, I visited Atami city that was famous in a hot spring this time. I change to Izu Kyuko Line at JR Atami Station and get off at "Kinomiya Station" of the next station. I walked for around five minutes and visited "Kinomiya Shrine". As it was a big tree and rock, the naturally comfortable ground including the waterfall, in the ancient times, a Shinto shrine is completed from the nature worship, and it is Kinomiya Shrine that it was in a place of the faith of the people of Atami neighboring villages. Therefore, it is said "Kinomiya" (shrine of the tree) until the Edo era, and is a shrine to worship gods dwelling in "a tree".
There are small pavilion with water and ladles, Inari shrine, Mitsumine shrine, second big camhpor tree beside the approach to a shrine when I enter in Otorii, and the place that climbed the stone stairway of approach to a shrine ahead is a main hall. I go and worship in a main hall, and there is camhpor tree "Ookusu" of the power spot of Kinomiya Shrine when I go the narrow way of the left hand. It is more than 2,000 years years old and is a tree (trunk lap 23.9m, about 26m in height) which is the hugest in Honshu. It is said that I prolong it for one year when past one lap of trunk and is the fortunate tree with the legend that healthy longevity and wish come true.
I arrived at Atami plum garden from Kinomiya Shrine in approximately ten minutes on foot. It is a beginning of Atami plum garden that plum and pine, 3,000 including the cherry tree were planted in the place with present garden in 1886. Renewal construction was done from 2007 by the contribution of the charitable person and became the park of "plum of the best early blooming in Japan" "Japan's slowest colored leaves". Plum Festival is held from early January through early March, and many tourists come every year. Three kinds of plums of "early blooming, average blooming, late-blooming" are planted in the garden and can enjoy the flowers all the time during the period of the festival. The memorial which transferred a house in Atami city where Shinpei Nakayama of the composer spent later years and "Korean Garden" which was made in commemoration of both leaders having visited Atami plum garden on the next day of the Japan-Korea summit meeting held in 2000, "Umemi no Taki" (the waterfall of the enjoying plum blossoms) where a garden is seen from the backside of the waterfall, Five bridges which hang over the Hatsugawa river flowing through the garden are in the garden, you can enjoy the scenery that matched with plums.
I left Atami plum garden and went to the Atami city area. As there was plum garden in the slightly elevated place, I went ahead through the downhill slope from there all the time. I advanced towards Atami-shi designation tangible cultural property "Kiunkaku". I went down the thin alley in spite of being a hesitation windingly and arrived at Kiunkaku in 30 minutes. This building comprises the garden which is full of green and is the site of 3,000 tsubos. It was architecture to leave romance of the Taishoand the Showa era, and this building built as a villa in 1919 was reborn as an inn in 1947. Yuzo Yamamoto, Naoya Shiga, Junichirou Tanizaki, Osamu Dazai, the representative writers of Japan including Seiichi Funabashi used it as a regular hotel.
It is a building of the 2-story sukiya style when I enter at the front entrance. It was built here by Shinnya Uchida who was also called marine transportation king in the first owners in 1919. The first-floor "room of the giraffe," the second-floor "room of Taiho" is the unique room where a wall was painted with with navy blue, and light to come in through the flint glass of the porch is beautiful, and feels Taisho romance. I go ahead through the corridor, and the next building is a European-style building built in 1932 by Kaichiro Nezu who was the second owner, and was said to be a railroad baron. Art deco-like "Tamahime" and U.K. in the Middle Ages -like "Gyokukei". The guest room that follows them becomes the museums such as great writer, Koyo Ozaki, Shouyou Tsubouchi related to Atami. In addition, there is a building called "Kongo" of Rome-style bathroom and artificial pond excursion-type Japanese garden and the huge stone of 20 tons of estimates that it took 2 months though 20 gardeners carry it is placed in the center. It is a place wanting you to drop in if you visit Atami. The return was approximately 20 minutes on foot to Atami Station, but cherry blossoms of the early blooming were in full bloom on the Itogawa promenade on the way and were 1st to feel the early spring.
